Rome's Municipal Rose Garden

Rome's Municipal Rose Garden

Located on the eastern side of the Aventine hill, overlooking the Circus Maximus, it is home to around 1,200 different varieties of roses. The higher section of the gardens features a collection of classic specimens, while the lower part of the garden hosts the roses that will take part to the prestigious Premio Roma, the annual international competition during which Rome’s most beautiful varieties of roses are elected.

Orange Trees Garden

Orange Trees Garden

Perched on top of the Aventine Hill, it is a beautiful public garden with pretty orange trees and a stunning view over Rome and St Peter’s dome, framed by the branches of beautiful pine trees. If you are looking for a romantic spot in the city, this should be high on your list!

Aventine Keyhole

Aventine Keyhole

The doorway leading to the Priory of the Knights of Malta, the legendary crusader knights and religious order, has a special keyhole whose vista lines up perfectly with the garden and is centered on the Vatican in the distance. No one seems to be able to say with certainty whether this was a beautifully planned peepshow, or just a lucky coincidence. Anyway, it’s definitely worth a visit!

Mouth of Truth

Mouth of Truth

This famous marble mask in Rome, better known as “Bocca della Verità”, stands against the left wall of the portico of the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. According to a medieval legend, it will bite off the hand of any liar who places their hand in its mouth or, alternatively, any who utters a lie while their hand is in the mouth. Would you be brave enough to insert your hands?

Ponte Sisto

Ponte Sisto

This bridge placed in Rome's historic centre, spanning the river Tiber, was commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV, after whom it is named. For its construction the architect, Baccio Pontelli, reused the foundations of a prior Roman bridge, the Pons Aurelius, which had been destroyed during the early Middle Ages. The bridge is architecturally characteristic because of the “oculus”: it was created to diminish the river's pressure on the bridge in case of flood.
