Dated 1650, it is considered the masterpiece of the Doria Pamphilj Gallery collection. In fact, this powerful image portrays the face, and even soul, of the pope with such great realism that many artists and art critics repute it as the finest portrait ever created. The painting is displayed in a special room called The Velázquez Cabinet.
Among the many masterpieces housed in the Doria Pamphilj Gallery it is impossible not to mention three stunning canvases by the Caravaggio: the Penitent Magdalene, the Rest on the Flight into Egypt and St. John the Baptist.
The Aldobrandini Room is the backdrop for this austere double portrait of great stylistic restraint representing two figures whose identity is still a mystery.
The Velázquez Cabinet offers the opportunity to compare Velázquez’s portrait painting with one of the two busts of the same Pope carved in marble by Bernini. In contrast with the painting, these stone representations, created around 1650, show the Pamphilj Pope with a rhetorically heroic look.
One of the most beautiful works of art housed in The Room of the “Primitives” of the Doria Pamphilj Gallery, entirely dedicated to an important series of paintings executed on wood panels. Lippi’s Annunciation reflects all the characteristics typical of the Florentine Renaissance with its complex architecture and the peculiar role of the light, that makes the colors bright and nuanced.
