Art Metro Stations of Naples

Art Metro Stations of Naples

The artistic project featured in Naples metro stations represent one of the most interesting Italian experiments to permanently display contemporary artwork in an urban context. The most famous ones are the Garibaldi, Municipio and Toledo stations. The latter, in particular, has been considered the most beautiful station in Europe by CNN and the Daily Telegraph. Completed in 2012, it is the backdrop to the impressive artwork by Robert Wilson, Crater de luz, which connects the inside with the outside and is reminiscent of the sea.

Church of Gesù Nuovo

Church of Gesù Nuovo

Gesù Nuovo is the name of a church and a square in Naples. The former was originally a palace built in 1470 for Roberto Sanseverino, Prince of Salerno, that was confiscated and eventually sold in the 1580s to the Jesuits to construct a church under the architect Giuseppe Valeriano. Today, the church is enriched by spectacular decorations, such as the vault frescos representing biblical and saintly narratives. The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple, a baroque masterpiece by Francesco Solimena, is also a featured among the various works of art.

Royal Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro

Royal Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro

Located in the Cathedral of Naples and dedicated to St. Januarius, patron saint of the city, this is the most lavishly decorated chapel in the Cathedral and contains contributions by the premier Baroque artists in Naples. Three times in a year the Cathedral becomes the meeting place of devotees, believers and tourists who gather here to witness the so-called “blood miracle of St. Gennaro”, a phenomenon during which the Saint’s blood transforms from a solid to a liquid...definitely the most ancient Neapolitan mystery!
