Herculaneum private tour

Herculaneum private tour

3-hour walking tour

Our itinerary will start right from Herculaneum, a city buried by the lava flow during the famous eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.

The architectural structures have been preserved to such an extent that the frescoes, mosaics and decorations reveal refined and timeless taste. We will complete the visit to Herculaneum with the Antiquarium. Here we will admire the famous Roman ship recovered on the coast of the city, as well as the jewels and furnishings that emerged from the excavations. The highlights of the site include the Hall of the Augustals with its marble floor and wall paintings, the elegantly decorated Thermal Baths and the Palestra, a monumental sports arena used for competitions and training.

Herculaneum

Herculaneum

Together with Pompeii and Oplontis, it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a perfect testimony of life in a typical Roman city. Although less well known than Pompeii, it was the first, and for a long time the only, buried Vesuvian city to be found: the traditional story is that it was rediscovered by chance in 1709, during the digging of a well. Today, Herculaneum attracts a great many visitors every year to its succession of streets, villas, shops, spa buildings and places of worship.

The Hall of the Augustals

The Hall of the Augustals

Known in Italian as Collegio degli Augustali, this is a temple of the imperial cult of Augustus located in the ruined ancient Roman city of Herculaneum. For the liberta (freed slaves), becoming Augustals meant entering into the dynamics of upward mobility. Their “board”, dedicated to worshiping the emperor Augustus, held its meetings in the area of the Forum, where all political, religious and commercial life took place.
