Siena is a delightful little shrine of art, one of the best preserved and untouched towns in Italy.

We will enjoy a stroll in the endless labyrinth of winding narrow streets, soak up the evocative medieval atmosphere and marvel in front of the beautiful fan-shaped square "il Campo", lined with ancient buildings, cafés and shops. While wandering through the town we will stop by the medieval palaces of the Sienese aristocracy and savour the delights of Ricciarelli or Panforte, whose tasty almond paste cookies are typical of Siena.

The tour will start with a visit to the church of S. Domenico with its beautiful frescoes and St. Catherine’s Holy relic. After that, we will dive into the heart of the city to see Piazza del Campo with its stunning City Hall (Palazzo Pubblico) and the world famous frescoes by Simone Martini and Ambrogio Lorenzetti. We will also enter the Cathedral: a milestone of European art that boasts masterpieces by Michelangelo, Pinturicchio, Donatello, Bernini and the glorious "Maestà" by Duccio di Buoninsegna.

Basilica of San Domenico

Basilica of San Domenico

This church is definitely worth a visit, not only because it is the second most important Church after the Cathedral, but particularly because it houses the relics of St. Catherine and the original portrait of her, painted by her contemporary and friend Andrea Vanni. Built as a Dominican convent between 1225 and 1265, the Basilica has fully gothic style and architecture.

Piazza del Campo

Piazza del Campo

Many of Siena's historical moments have happened on the Piazza del Campo, or better, 'il Campo', as the Sienese call it. Here, spectacular and terrible ‘games’ took place during the years, at some point replaced by the Palio. The Palio is an event which takes place twice a year and that inflames the spirit of both Siena and its inhabitants. This piazza is a very unique place, starting with the very particular conformation of the ground, turning the square into a big concave shell.

Cathedral of Siena

Cathedral of Siena

Siena's Beautiful Gothic Cathedral is filled with treasures by Pisano, Donatello and Michelangelo as well as frescoes by Pinturicchio. The exterior and interiors are decorated in white and greenish-black marble in alternating stripes, black and white being the symbolic colors of Siena. Among the treasures housed inside it, it is worth mentioning the bronze statue of ‘St. John the Baptist’ by Donatello, the Piccolomini Library, the rose window by Duccio di Buoninsegna and the marble pulpit by Nicola Pisano.

Siena City Hall

Siena City Hall

The Palazzo Comunale, also known as the Palazzo Pubblico of Siena, can be considered one of the main symbols of the city. It rises next to the slender Torre del Mangia in Piazza del Campo and today it remains the official seat of the Communal Administration of Siena. On the first floor there's the Civic Museum that preserves masterpieces of Sienese art such as the series of frescoes by Ambrogio Lorenzetti and the splendid “Maestà” by Simone Martini, one of the most important works of the fourteenth century in Italy.
